Core Benefits at Geron
Geron covers the majority of costs for an employee and his/her eligible dependents' medical insurance. Dental, vision, basic life insurance, AD&D, and long-term disability premiums are paid 100% by Geron. An employee's shared cost is based on the medical premiums, but an employee has the option to choose any combination of coverage from the medical, dental and vision insurances offered. An employee may also opt out of these programs as long as they are able to provide evidence of other medical coverage.
Geron recognizes that each employee and their dependents may have very different medical needs; therefore Geron is pleased to offer three diverse medical plan choices for full-time regular employees. Medical plan options include: Aetna PPO, Aetna HMO, and Kaiser Permanente HMO. Employee premium contributions are on a pre-tax basis.
Geron offers a comprehensive dental benefit through Delta Dental for employees and their dependents. The plan is a Dental Preferred Provider Organization (DPPO) and there are a variety of in-network providers to choose from around the Bay Area.
Geron provides vision coverage to eligible employees and their dependents. This includes receiving an eye examination and a $120 allowance towards lenses and/or frames once every 12 months with only a $20 co-pay. This plan is insured by Vision Service Plan (VSP).
Life Insurance and Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance
Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance is offered through Aetna and is equivalent to two times the employee's annual salary (up to a maximum of $850,000).
Supplemental Life Insurance
Supplemental Life Insurance for employees and their dependents is offered through Aetna with the option to purchase additional life insurance up to three times the employee's annual salary (up to a maximum of $300,000). This is a voluntary benefit offered to employees when they start at Geron, as well as during every open enrollment.
For a short-term disability due to an employee's own medical injury, illness, or pregnancy, Geron will provide supplemental pay in coordination with State Disability Insurance (SDI) such that the employee's wages will equal 80% of the employee's regular wages.
Long-Term Disability (LTD)
Geron also provides long-term disability insurance through Aetna. On the 121st day of disability, LTD coverage begins if determined eligible under Aetna's criteria. Under LTD, an eligible employee is provided up to 60% of basic monthly earnings to a maximum monthly benefit of $15,000. Employees will have the option to pay the tax on their long-term disability premium each pay period, so that in the event an employee is eligible to receive LTD benefits, they would be on a tax-free basis.
Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)
Geron offers health care and dependent care reimbursement accounts to eligible employees. This plan allows deferral of pre-tax money to cover medical expenses not covered by insurance to a maximum of $2,500 per year as well as dependent care expenses up to $5,000 per year, per family.
