Imetelstat as Maintenance Therapy After Chemotherapy in Lung Cancer

Helpful Information

  • Maintenance therapy is treatment given to help keep cancer from coming back after it has disappeared following the initial therapy.
  • Induction therapy is the initial treatment used to reduce a cancer. It is also called first-line therapy, primary therapy, and primary treatment.
  • Platinum is a metal that is an important component of some anti-cancer drugs such as cisplatin and carboplatin.
  • Progression-free survival (PFS) is the length of time during and after treatment in which the cancer does not get worse.
  • Objective response rate measures how many patients in the study have had either a partial or complete response to treatment.
  • Standard of care is a treatment that experts agree is appropriate, accepted, and widely used. It is also often called best practice, standard medical care, or standard therapy.

A Randomized Phase 2 Study of Imetelstat (GRN163L) as Maintenance Therapy After Initial Induction Chemotherapy for Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC)

Geron is enrolling patients in a clinical trial to evaluate the potential benefit of our product candidate, imetelstat, as maintenance therapy for patients with advanced stage NSCLC. This study is open to patients who have not progressed, meaning their cancer has not worsened, after platinum-based induction chemotherapy.

In this Phase 2 clinical trial, our clinical researchers and investigators will be evaluating how maintenance therapy with imetelstat impacts the progression-free survival rates of patients with NSCLC.

Additionally, we are collecting data on the objective response rate in patients.

Upon acceptance to the study, patients will be assigned by chance or “randomized” to separate groups that compare results of treatment with imetelstat in addition to standard of care against standard of care alone. Patients who were randomized to the control arm will be given the option to receive imetelstat at the end of the study.

In this study the standard of care is observation or observation with bevacizumab. Patients who previously received bevacizumab with their induction chemotherapy will continue to receive bevacizumab in this study.

Imetelstat is an investigational treatment for cancer in development by Geron and has not been approved by the FDA or any other regulatory agency.

About Imetelstat

Imetelstat inhibits the activity of telomerase, which is an enzyme present in most types of cancer that enables tumor cells to replicate indefinitely. One of Geron's potential anti-cancer strategies is to stop or slow down the growth and spread of tumors by inhibiting telomerase activity. Learn more
