ViaGen, Inc., an Animal Cloning Company

In May 1999, Geron acquired the license to the intellectual property portfolio containing the fundamental nuclear transfer (cloning) patents that were exemplified by the creation of "Dolly the sheep."

Today, the intellectual property portfolio covering nuclear transfer in animals is licensed from Geron to ViaGen, Inc., a global leader in commercial animal gene banking and cloning services. Geron owns 40% of ViaGen.

The technology that ViaGen offers has the potential to impact many fields of biotechnology product development. In agriculture, cloning can be used to improve health, quality and consistency of animal herds more quickly than is possible through conventional breeding. For human medicine, cloning may be used to develop animals that secrete therapeutic proteins in their milk or to produce humanized antibodies for use as vaccines.

ViaGen's mission is to add value to the marketplace by producing animal clones, licensing and selling proprietary animal genetics, and providing traits and technology for animal agriculture industries worldwide. For more information on ViaGen, please visit www.viagen.com.
